unwanted journey...(an excerpt)

We swivled and swerved until we came to the end of the tunnel. Expecting to see something not unlike what we had seen on the other side of the long tunnel the day before, we just kept moving with little apprehension; like a naïve child who fails to fear a hot burner. It was an absolute mistake, and of course we see that now, but before we reached the final few feet of the tunnel we chatted away about the day’s activities and what great fun we had experienced. We laughed and shouted without a care in the world. They heard us coming; perhaps even a few hours before we arrived. Our bodies ached from a day of walking and, although in good spirits, we were utterly exhausted. Had we tried to run, they would have caught us quickly and assumed we were up to no good. Instead, we smiled politely and offered what was left of a lemon cake in Rianne’s bag. They grabbed our belongings and ushered us in front of them without saying a word. The sheer enormity of these beasts (I dare say we could call them that for the aren’t people and they aren’t quite monsters) was enough persuasion to do as we were told.
